The University of California's FBI Part I Crime Offenses decreased by 5.4% in 2007.
Violent crime increased by 12.6%, while property crime decreased
by 7%. Property crime offenses represented 90.53% of the 5,679
cases using the FBI reporting criteria contained in the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program to determine the University of California's 2007 reportable crimes.
Valid assessments are possible only with careful study and analysis of the range of unique conditions affecting each local law enforcement jurisdiction. The reader is, therefore, cautioned against comparing statistical data of individual reporting units from cities, metropolitan areas or universities solely on the basis of their population coverage or student enrollment.
There were 538 reports of violent crimes in 2007, compared
to 478 in 2006.
- No homicides - the same as 2006
- Nineteen rapes - four less than 2006
- One attempted rape - one less than 2006
- Fifty four robberies - seven less than 2006
- Four hundred sixty five assaults - seventy one more than 2006
- Of the assaults reported in 2007, 398 were simple assaults
compared to 341 in 2006
There were 5,141 property crimes reported in 2007, a decrease
of 384 compared to 2006.
- Burglary - decreased 8.9%
- Larceny theft - decreased 6.4%
- Motor vehicle theft - decreased 19.9%
- Arson - increased from 15 in 2006 to 35 in 2007
The University of California Police Department is reporting
other offenses based upon defined criteria derived from the
FBI Part II definitions. Based
on the different criteria for identifying and collecting the
data, some of the headings for “Other Offenses”
in the versions of the Annual Report prior to 2006 do not lend themselves to
comparison with data collected in this edition of the Annual Report.
The number of Systemwide reported instances of Forgery &
Counterfeiting cases was 71 in 2007 while the University
reported 103 cases in 2006.
The number of 2007 Systemwide reported cases for Fraud was
218. In 2006 the University reported 134 cases. Some of this increase can be attributed to the growth of reports of identity theft.
The number of reported embezzlement cases in 2007 was 16.
In 2006, there were 15 reports.
The number of reported offenses related for buying, receiving
and/or possessing stolen property in 2007 was 41. In 2006,
this category had 452 cases.
In 2007, the number of vandalism cases was 1,138 compared to
956 in 2006.
Weapons Offenses – Firearms: In 2007, the number of
reported firearms offenses was 13 compared to 12 in 2006. This represents a decrease of 16.7%.
Weapons Offenses – All Others: In 2007, the number
of weapons offenses – all other, was 58 compared to
61 in 2006. This represents a decrease of 4.9%.
Overall, Weapons offenses decreased 2.7% from 73 in 2006 to
71 in 2007.
The number of reported Sex Offenses in 2007 was 56 compared to 56 in 2006.
In 2007, there were 607 drug abuse violations. In 2006, there
were 596 violations reported. Drug paraphernalia offenses
are measured in “All Other Offenses - All Other UCR 26.”
In 2007 as well as 2006, there were no gambling offenses reported.
In 2007, there were 323 reported DUI cases compared to 323
in 2006. This no change in reported offenses.
The number of liquor law violations reported in 2007 was 503. In 2006, there were 289 offenses reported. This represents a 74% increase in reported offenses.
The number of drunkenness offenses in 2007 was 741. In 2006, the University reported 730 Drunkenness cases. This represents a 1.5% increase.
In 2007, there were 158 disorderly conduct cases. In 2006,
the University reported 96 incidents.
This data include other
offenses surrounding breaches of the peace.
Overall, in 2007 there were 1517 All Other UCR Offenses reported. Within
this category, the following five categories were identified
in order to highlight offenses reported within All
All Other Offenses - Bomb Actual: The number of reported
actual bomb offenses remained the same with from 1 reported in 2006 and
1 reported in 2007.
All Other Offenses - Bomb Threat: The number of reported
bomb threats increased from 5 reported in 2006 to 7
reported in 2007.
All Other Offenses - Trespass Demo: Incidents of trespassing
related to campus demonstrations and protests increased from 3 in 2006 to 15 reported in 2007.
All Other Offenses - Trespass Other: Other types of trespassing displayed a 15.5% decrease from 116 in 2006 to 98 in 2007.
The clearance rate for FBI Part I Offenses in 2007 increased to 13.6%.
- 63.8% of reported violent crimes were cleared in 2007.
- 8.3% of property offenses were cleared in 2007.
The clearance rate for Part II Offenses was 68.4% in 2007.
University of California Police Officers arrested 4,486 persons in 2007.
Of those arrested, 77.8% were not affiliated with the University.
Of those total persons arrested in 2007, 148 persons were
arrested for Part I violent offenses, 315 for Part I property crimes, 2775 for Part II offenses and 1,248 persons were arrested for warrants or non-Part I/II crimes.
Property reported stolen to the University of California Police in 2007 totaled $4,591,371. Of the loss, $1,192,043 was the property of the University of California. Total property recovered was valued at $894,337 for an 19.5% recovery rate.
