

UC’s FBI Crime Index decreased by 5% in 2004. Violent
crime increased by 16%, while property crime decreased by 5%.
Property crime offenses represented 98% of the 6, 014 cases
used by the FBI to determine the UC’s 2004 index.


There were 126 reports of violent crimes in 2004, compared
to 125 in 2003.
- No homicides - the same as 2003
- Twenty-three rapes - one more than 2003
- Four attempted rapes - one less than 2003
- Twenty-eight robberies - nine less than 2003
- Seventy-one aggravated assaults - ten more than
2003


There were 5,888 property crimes reported in 2004, a decrease
of 333 compared to 2003.
- Burglary - decreased 14%
- Bicycle theft - increased 3%
- All other theft - decreased 6%
- Motor vehicle theft - decreased 9%
- Arson - decreased from 40 in 2003 to 31 in 2004


The number of other reported offenses decreased 3% in 2004.

The number of simple assaults decreased 3% in 2004.

The number of reported sex offenses using force decreased
university wide, from 30 in 2003 to 16 in 2004. Please see

The number of reported sex offenses without force decreased
from eight in 2003 to 3 in 2004. Please see glossary for definition.

The number of reported firearms offenses increased from 10
in 2003 to 16 in 2004.

The number of reported other weapons offenses decreased from
56 in 2003 to 43 in 2004.

The number of reported actual bomb offenses did not change
with four reported in 2003 and four reported in 2004.

The number of reported bomb threats decreased from 10 in 2003
to 6 in 2004.

The number of reported disturbing the peace offenses decreased
from 33 in 2003 to 25 in 2004.

Incidents of trespassing related to campus demonstrations
and protests decreased from 30 in 2003 to one in 2004. Other
types of trespassing increased from 101 in 2003 to 205 in 2004.

The number of reported vandalism offenses decreased from 1018
in 2003 to 825 in 2004.

The number of reported forgery offenses decreased from 74
in 2003 to 71 in 2004.

The number of reported felony narcotics cases increased 20%
and misdemeanor cases increased 12% in 2004.

The number of reported public drunkenness offenses increased
from 404 in 2003 to 486 in 2004.

The number of reported alcohol related driving offenses increased
35%, while drug related driving offenses decreased by 10, from
32 in 2003 to 22 in 2004.

The clearance rate for FBI Index Offenses in 2004 was 7%.
- Fifty-two percent of reported violent crimes were cleared
in 2004.
- Six percent of property offenses were cleared in 2004.
- The clearance rate for all other offenses was 58% in 2004.

University Police Officers arrested 3,513 persons in 2004.
Of those arrested, 80% were not affiliated with the University.
Of those total persons arrested in 2004, Forty-five persons
were arrested for violent offenses and 347 for property crime.

Property reported stolen to U.C. Police in 2004 totaled $5,494,842.
Of the loss, $1,410,486 was property of the University of California.
Total property recovered was valued at $1,357,580 for a 25%
recovery rate.
