Crime Trends

Crime statistics for 2004 represent reported occurrences at properties in Santa Barbara and Isla Vista, owned or operated by the University of California Regents. It should be noted that during 2003, the University acquired Francisco Torres Residence Hall with a resident population of approximately 1300 residents. This acquisition had an impact of reported crimes for 2003 and 2004.

Total reported Part I Offenses in 2004 (four hundred eighty-six) increased by 12% compared to 2003 ( four hundred and thirty-three).

There were ten Part I Violent Crimes reported in 2004, up from nine in 2003.

There were four hundred seventy-six Part I Property Crimes reported in 2004, compared to four hundred twenty-four in 2003, an increase of 12%.

Burglary decreased from fifty-eight in 2003 to fifty-five in 2004. Larcenies increased from three hundred fifty-nine in 2003 to four hundred fourteen in 2004. Motor Vehicle thefts remained the same at four as did Arson at three compared to 2003.

One of the burglaries resulted in the loss of $250,000 worth of multi-media equipment and computers from the Learning Resources department.

The department achieved a 40% clearance rate for Part I Violent Crimes and a 7% clearance rate for Part I Property Crimes. The overall clearance rate in 2004 for all Part I offenses was 7%.

Violent Crime

Summary

  • No homicides - same as 2003
  • Four rapes - three more than 2003
  • Two attempt rapes - one less than 2003
  • No robberies - one less than 2003
  • Four aggravated assaults - same as 2003

Homicide

No reported homicides in 2004.

Rape

Four reported rapes in 2004. Three of the assaults were acquaintance assaults, where the victim knew the suspect. The other was possibly a drug facilitated assault.

Two attempted rapes in 2004. One of the assaults took place on the main campus during the day. The suspect attacked the victim and drug her to some bushes. Two witnesses intervened and removed the suspect from the victim, and directed responding officers to the suspects location via cell phone. The suspect was arrested. The other assault was an acquaintance assault in a residence hall.

Robbery

No robberies were reported in 2004

Aggravated Assault

Four aggravated assaults were reported in 2004. Two of the assaults took place in residence halls. One involved the suspect spraying three victims with pepper spray and striking one victim with a club. The other incident involved the suspect throwing a bottle at the victim cutting a tendon in the victim’s hand. One of the other incidents involved two students being shot by a BB gun by an unknown suspect. The last incident involved two parties arguing over a parking space which resulted in the suspect striking the victim with a motor vehicle.

Property Crime

Summary

  • Fifty-five burglaries - four less than 2003
  • Two hundred sixty-five bicycle thefts - twenty-two more than 2003
  • One hundred forty-nine other thefts - thirty-three more than 2003
  • Four motor vehicle thefts - same as 2003
  • Three arsons - same as 2003

Burglary

There were twenty-five forced entries, twenty-eight non-forced entries, and two attempted forced entries for a total of fifty-five burglaries reported in 2004. Arrest or exceptional means cleared six of the burglaries.

Larceny - Theft

There were two hundred sixty-five bicycle thefts in 2004, compared to two hundred forty-three in 2003. Arrest or exceptional means cleared eleven of the theft cases. Other thefts totaled one hundred fifty-one in 2004, compared to one hundred sixteen in 2003. Arrest or exceptional means cleared fourteen of these thefts.

Motor Vehicle Theft

Four motor vehicle thefts were reported in 2004, the same as 2003. One was cleared by arrest or exceptional means.

Arson

Three arsons were reported in 2004, the same as 2003.
