Crime Trends

Reported Offenses

Part I offenses increased by 13% compared to 2003. Six hundred fifty-two Part I offenses were reported to our department in 2004.

There were six violent crimes reported on the San Diego campus in 2004, one less than in 2003. Property crimes increased by 14%. Burglaries remained the same with sixty-three reported last year.

The number of thefts went up by 18%; bicycle thefts were up 39% and all other thefts increased by 11%. Vehicle thefts decreased by 13% and arsons went up by two, with four reported last year.

Clearance Rates

There was a 10% clearance rate for reported property crimes. We cleared 6% of reported burglaries while 11% of thefts were cleared. We cleared 6% of the motor vehicle thefts and one of the four reported arsons.

Our clearance rate for all reported Part I offenses was 10%, compared to 9% in 2003.

Violent Crimes

No homicides reported in 2004.

Rape

There were two rapes reported in 2004.

Robbery

There was one robbery reported in 2004.

Aggravated Assault

There were three cases of reported aggravated assaults in 2004.

Property Crime

Summary

  • Burglary – remained the same
  • Bicycle Theft – 39% increase
  • All Other Larcenies – 11% increase
  • Motor Vehicle Theft – 13% decrease
  • Arson – 100% increase

Other Offenses

There were six hundred thirty-three Part II offenses reported to us in 2004, an increase of 19% over the previous year. Of these 72% were cleared compared to 65% the year before.

There were ten cases involving weapons last year, compared to ten the year before. Alcohol related incidents were up by 38%.

We had five bias motivated crimes reported, four more than the year before.

Domestic violence incidents increased by 36%.

There were two assaults against police officers, three less than the previous year. Both incidents occurred during an arrest or detention of suspect(s). There were no gang-related cases reported last year, the same as 2003.
