Property Crime

Burglary

Burglary was down from 78 cases in 2003 to 24 in 2004

Bicycle Theft

Bicycle theft was down from 132 cases in 2003 to 65 in 2004

A bicycle registration program was implemented on January 1st 2004 in an effort to reduce bike theft and increase the number of bikes recovered and returned to their owners. A bicycle’s serial number is entered in a state DMV system that can link a registered bike to the proper owner. This feature has been helpful for officers attempting to verify if a suspect is in possession of a stolen bike.

Other Theft

Other theft was down from 237 cases in 2003 to 209 in 2004

A significant portion of these thefts involved property that was left unattended or left in plain view. Popular items included purses, cell phones, CD’s, backpacks, books, audio equipment and computer equipment.

Motor Vehicle Theft

Motor vehicle theft was down from 38 cases in 2003 to 30 in 2004

Arson

Arsons were down from 10 cases in 2003 to 2 in 2004

Other Offenses

Other offenses were down from 382 cases in 2003 to 282 in 2004.

• Simple assaults were down from 39 offenses in 2003 to 35 in 2004.
• Vandalism was down from 68 offenses in 2003 to 61 in 2004.
• Narcotics violations were down from 54 cases in 2003 to 32 in 2004.
• Driving under the influence was down from 44 in 2003 to 27 in 2004.
• Vehicle code violations were down from 77 in 2003 to 57 in 2004.

Arrests were down from 263 for 2003 to 222 in 2004. Approximately 21% of those arrested (47) were affiliated with the University.

UC Riverside officers issued 351 citations for vehicle code violations in 2004.

There were 48 traffic accidents reported, an increase of twenty-two.

Weapons related cases were down from 10 in 2003 to 9 in 2004. Of the nine weapons related cases, two involved firearms, two involved a knife or cutting instrument and five involved other dangerous weapons.

There were no gang related incidents.

There were 43 alcohol related cases in 2004, down by thirty from the 73 cases in 2003.

There were nine domestic violence calls, down by two from the 11 cases in 2003.

There were five bias motivated cases reported in 2004. Two were based upon sexual orientation, two based upon religion and one was based upon race.
