

Reported FBI Index crimes on the Berkeley Campus decreased in
2004, compared to the previous year. There was a decrease
in both Violent and Property Crime Indexes.
There was a
decrease in the number of FBI Index violent crimes,
with twenty-five reported in 2004 compared with thirty-three
in 2003.
Reported property crimes in 2004 were 980, a
12% decrease over 2003.
Total FBI Index offenses decreased
by 12%.

There were no reported homicides in 2004. The last homicide was
reported in 1992. Three rapes were reported in 2004. Robberies
saw a significant decrease, from 12 in 2003, to 6 in 2004.
Aggravated assaults stayed the same with 16 in 2004 and 16
in 2003.

- No homicides - the same as 2003
- Three rapes/0 attempted rapes - two less than 2003
- Six robberies - down six from 2003
- Sixteen aggravated assaults - the same as 2003

Reported burglaries were identical in number, with 91 in both
2004 as in 2003. Total larcenies decreased from 969 in 2003
to 853 in 2004, a 12% decrease.
Motor vehicle thefts dropped from 47 in 2003 to 31 in 2004.
Reported arsons decreased from to 6 in 2003 to 5 in 2004.

- Burglary stayed the same
- Bicycle theft up 16%
- All other theft decreased 23%
- Motor vehicle theft down 17%
There were 980 reported FBI Index property crimes in 2004, compared
to 1113 in 2003.
The recovery rate for stolen property was
15%.

Total Other Offenses decreased from 1039 in 2003 to 857 in
2004.
Simple assaults increased from 80 in 2003 to 87 in
2004. Fifty seven percent of the simple assaults were cleared.
Reports of Other Offenses weapons crimes dropped from 16 on 2003
to 12 in
2004. Eighty three percent of the weapons offenses
were cleared. One weapons offense involved firearms.
There
were thirteen domestic violence related incidents in 2004.
None of the incidents involved weapons.
There were no gang
related offenses reported in 2004, the same as 2003.
There were seven bias motivated cases reported
in 2004. The number of Police Officers assaulted decreased
from nine in 2003 to seven in 2004.

The clearance rate for all reported FBI Index offenses was
5%.
Overall, 56% of reported violent crimes were cleared in
2004, either by arrest, or through exceptional clearance.
The clearance
rate was noticeably higher than 2003.
Seventy five percent
of aggravated assaults were cleared. One of the three reported
rapes in 2004 was cleared, for
a 33% clearance rate. Sixteen percent of the robberies
were cleared.
Four percent of reported property crimes were
cleared in 2004.

Fourteen persons were arrested in 2004 for
FBI Index violent offenses, compared to thirteen in 2003.
Two of the persons arrested for violent offenses were affiliated
with UC Berkeley, both for aggravated assaults.
Fifty-four
persons were arrested for all FBI Index offenses in 2004.
Arrests for Other Offenses were 906 in 2004 compared
to 745 in 2003.
