FBI Crime Index Offenses

UC’s FBI Crime Index increased by 8% in 2003. Violent crime increased by 11%, while property crime increased 8%. Property crime offenses represented 98% of the 6,346 cases used by the FBI to determine the UC’s 2003 index.

Violent Crime

Summary

There were 125 reports of violent crimes in 2003, compared to 113 in 2002.

  • No homicides - the same as 2002
  • Twenty-two rapes - up eight compared to 2002
  • Five attempted rapes - one more than 2002
  • Thirty-seven robberies - four less than 2002
  • Sixty-one aggravated assaults - seven more than 2002

Property Crime

Summary

There were 6,221 property crimes reported in 2003, an increase of 442 compared to 2002.

  • Burglary - increased 18%
  • Bicycle theft - increased 30%
  • All other theft - decreased 1%
  • Motor vehicle theft - increased 8%
  • Arson - increased 150%, from sixteen in 2002, to forty in 2003

Other Offenses

Summary

The number of other reported offenses increased 5% in 2003.

Simple Assaults

The number of simple assaults increased 34% in 2003.

Sex Offenses - Force

The number of reported sex offenses using force increased university wide, from 29 in 2002 to 30 in 2003. Please see glossary for definition.

Sex Offenses - Force

The number of reported sex offenses without force increased from six in 2002 to eight in 2003. Please see glossary for definition.

Weapons - Firearms

The number of reported firearms offenses decreased from 18 in 2002 to 10 in 2003.

Weapons - Other

The number of reported other weapons offenses increased from 54 in 2002 to 56 in 2003.

Bombs - Actual

The number of reported actual bomb offenses increased from two in 2002 to four in 2003.

Bomb Threats

The number of reported bomb threats decreased from 11 in 2002 to 10 in 2003.

Disturbing The Peace

The number of reported disturbing the peace offenses increased from 29 in 2002 to 33 in 2003.

Trespass

Incidents of trespassing related to campus demonstrations and protests increased from five in 2002 to 30 in 2003. Other types of trespassing decreased from 162 in 2002 to 101 in 2003.

Vandalism

The number of reported vandalism offenses increased from 953 in 2002 to 1018 in 2003.

Forgery / NSF Checks

The number of reported forgery offenses remained the same as 2002, at 74.

Narcotics Cases - Felony And Misdemeanor

The number of reported felony narcotics cases increased 24% and misdemeanor cases increased 7% in 2003.

Public Drunkenness

The number of reported public drunkenness offenses remained the same in 2003 at 404.

Driving Under The Influence - Alcohol / Drugs

The number of reported alcohol related driving offenses increased 28%, while drug related driving offenses increased by one, from 31 in 2002 to 32 in 2003.

Clearance Rates

The clearance rate for F.B.I. Index Offenses in 2003 was 6%.

  • Thirty-nine percent of reported violent crimes were cleared in 2003.
  • Six percent of property offenses were cleared in 2003.
  • The clearance rate for all other offenses was 56% in 2003.

Arrests

University Police Officers arrested 3,125 persons in 2003. Of those arrested, 78% were not affiliated with the University. Forty-four persons were arrested for violent offenses and 287 for property crime.

Stolen & Recovered Property

Property reported stolen to U.C. Police in 2003 totaled $5,547, 198. Of the loss, $1,287,970, was property of the University of California. Property recovered was valued at $1,494,398, for a 27% recovery rate.
