Crime Trends

Reported Offenses

Part I offenses increased by 16% compared to 2002. Five hundred seventy-six Part I offenses were reported to our department in 2003.

There were seven violent crimes reported on the San Diego campus in 2003, three more than in 2002. Property crimes increased by 16%. Burglaries also increased with sixty-three reported last year compared to forty-nine the year before.

The number of thefts went up by 16%; bicycle thefts were up 135% and all other thefts were down by 2%. Vehicle thefts increased 4% and arsons remained the same with two reported last year.

Clearance Rates

There was a 9% clearance rate for reported property crimes. We cleared 2% of reported burglaries while 10% of thefts were cleared. We cleared 9% of the motor vehicle thefts and the two reported arsons remain unsolved.

Our clearance rate for all reported Part I offenses was 9%, compared to 7% in 2002.

Homicide

No homicides reported in 2003

Rape

There was one attempted rape reported in 2003.

Robbery

There were three robberies reported in 2003, two of them stemming from the same incident involving juveniles attending summer camp.

Aggravated Assault

There were three cases of reported aggravated assaults in 2003.

Property Crime

Summary

  • Burglary – 29% increase
  • Bicycle Theft – 135% increase
  • All Other Larcenies – 2% decrease
  • Motor Vehicle Theft – 4% increase
  • Arson – Remained the same

Other Offenses

There were five hundred twelve Part II offenses reported to us in 2003, an increase of 10% over the previous year. Of these, 65% were cleared compared to 63% the year before.

There were three cases involving weapons last year, compared to ten the year before. Alcohol related incidents were up by 34%.

We had one bias motivated crime reported, the same as the year before. Six bias motivated incidents were also documented in 2003.

Domestic violence incidents decreased by 33%.

There were five assaults against police officers, four more than the previous year. All of the incidents occurred during an arrest or detention of suspect(s). There were no gang-related cases reported last year, the same as 2002.
