Crime Trends

Reported Offenses

Reported FBI Index crimes on the Berkeley Campus increased in 2003, compared to the previous year. There was an increase in both Violent and Property Crime Indexes.

There was an increase in the number of FBI Index violent crimes, with thirty-three reported in 2003, compared to twenty-two in 2002.

Reported property crimes in 2003 were 1,113, a 14% increase over 2002.

Total FBI Index offenses increased by 15%.

Violent Crime

There were no reported homicides in 2003. The last homicide was reported in 1992. Four rapes and one attempted rape were reported in 2003. Robberies saw a slight decrease, from 13 in 2002, to 12 in 2003. Aggravated assaults increased significantly from 5 in 2002, to 16 in 2003.

The thirty-three reported violent offenses in 2003, was one of the highest one-year totals during the past five years.

Summary

  • No homicides - the same as 2002
  • Five rapes/attempted rapes - one more than 2002
  • Twelve robberies - down one from 2002
  • Sixteen aggravated assaults - up eleven from 2002

Property Crime

Reported burglaries decreased slightly, from to 93 in 2002 to 91 in 2003. Total larcenies increased from 853 in 2002 to 969 in 2003, a 13% increase.
Motor vehicle thefts rose from 31 in 2002 to 47 in 2003. Reported arsons increased from to 1 in 2002 to 6 in 2003.

  • Bicycle theft down 15%
  • All other theft increased 25%
  • Motor vehicle theft up 51%

There were 1113 reported FBI Index property crimes in 2002, compared to 978 in 2002.

The recovery rate for stolen property was 25%.

Other Offenses

Total part II offenses decreased from 1,230 in 2002 to 1,039 in 2003.

Simple assaults increased from 74 in 2002 to 80 in 2003. Sixty percent of the simple assaults were cleared.

Reports of Part II weapons crimes remained the same as in 2002, with sixteen reported. Seventy-five percent of the weapons offenses were cleared. Two weapons offenses involved firearms.

There were seventeen domestic violence related incidents in 2003. Six of the incidents involved weapons.

There were no gang related offenses reported in 2003, the same as 2002. There were eleven bias motivated cases reported in 2003. The number of Police Officers assaulted increased from seven in 2002, to nine in 2003.

Clearance Rates

The clearance rate for all reported FBI Index offenses was 5%

Overall, 45% of reported violent crimes were cleared in 2003, either by arrest, or through exceptional clearance. The clearance rate was substantially higher than 2002.

Sixty-nine percent of aggravated assaults were cleared. Two of the four reported rapes in 2003 were cleared, for a 50% clearance rate. Seventeen percent of the robberies were cleared.

Three percent of reported property crimes were cleared in 2003.

Arrests

Thirteen persons were arrested in 2003 for FBI Index violent offenses, compared to three in 2002. Five of the persons arrested for violent offenses were affiliated with UC Berkeley, all for aggravated assaults.

Sixty-one persons were arrested for all FBI Index offenses in 2003.

Arrests for Part II offenses were 745, in 2003, compared to 641 in 2002.
